Malaysian authorities have condemned rumoured plans for a New Year’s Eve sex party at a remote beach, while police warned the “no-underwear” event could be a con job.Newspaper reports said the party for the under-40s, to be held in southern Johor state bordering Singapore, was being advertised through a website that asked for 250 ringgit (A$104) as an entrance fee.”A sex party is against our culture and religion and if it went on, it would damage the country’s reputation worldwide,” Tourism Minister Azalina Othman said according to the New Straits Times newspaper on Tuesday.

The Tokyo Tower has turned 50 with a rock concert, sales of memorabilia and a talk show with the author of a best seller which uses the landmark as an emotive backdrop.Modelled on Paris’ Eiffel Tower but painted orange and white for aviation safety, the world’s tallest free-standing steel structure has attracted 157 million tourists.A symbol of Japan’s post-war economic miracle, the 333-metre tower has been the centrepiece of a dozen novels and movies as well as 20 songs and a romantic spot for young lovers in the heart of the capital.

Drinkers in Indonesia are facing the daunting possibility of a dry festive season, with hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs across the Muslim-majority nation hit by an extreme shortage of alcohol.Many top brands have disappeared from shelves while prices for lesser known and even poor quality labels have skyrocketed after a government crackdown on a flourishing black market in booze.

Fears wolf at Great Wall may attack tourists December 29, 2008

A wolf has been spotted near a popular tourist spot along the Great Wall of China, with officials rushing to catch it before it attacks anyone, state media said Tuesday.The wolf was spotted last week near the Badaling section of the wall, a destination for hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, the Beijing News reported.It said experts had analysed a photo of the animal and looked into traces that it left behind, concluding beyond doubt that it was indeed a wolf.

China Replaces Us As Japan’s Biggest Export Market December 27, 2008

China has replaced the United States as Japan’s biggest export destination, underlining the Olympic host’s emergence as a global economic power.Japan’s finance ministry said exports to China outstripped those to the US in July, marking the 38th consecutive increase in exports to its Asian neighbor. It was the first time Japan had sold more goods to China than to any other country since the government started keeping records in 1950. Economists are skeptical that exports to China will continue to drive Japan’s faltering economic recovery.

Thailand’s first marine national park, established as such in 1974, Tarutao lies off the coast of Satun Province and comprises of 51 mountainous and forested islands, with caves, mangrove swamps and beaches strung along their shorelines. The dramatic beauty of the scenery is all the more striking when considered with the island’s history.The word ‘Tarutao’ is derived from Malay and translated as old and mysterious, a reference to the legend that the islands were long hidden from the world and were to remain troubled after a curse was cast upon them by a beautiful princess who was wrongly accused of adultery.

Costa signs Shanghai cruise consultancy deal December 22, 2008

Shanghai International Port Group has signed up leading European cruise operator, Costa Cruises, to jointly set up China’s first customer service and consulting firm targeting the cruise sector, Shanghai Daily has reported.The contract was signed on Friday night in Genoa by Costa’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pier Luigi Foschi, and SIPG Chairman, Lu Haigu.The joint venture aims to provide consulting service support to Chinese travel agents, as well as champion the sales of Costa cruise packages in China and around the world, according to a statement issued on Friday. The scope of the joint venture includes commercial consulting, tourist information consulting, and cruise and passenger shipping information consulting, the report added.
