Photographers who captured the spectacular 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix through their lenses now have a chance to take part in the Singapore Grand Prix Photo Competition by simply submitting their best photographs online.Mr Chang Chee Pey, Director of Brand Management, Singapore Tourism Board, said, “Set against a backdrop of historical monuments and modern iconic buildings, the 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix was a race high on suspense and full of nail-biting moments that provided great photo opportunities. Many race fans were well-equipped with cameras to photograph their favourite teams in action. With this photo competition, we hope to uncover some picture perfect shots that will celebrate the spirit of Formula One in our vibrant and cosmopolitan city even as preparations for this year’s race goes full steam ahead.”

Accor’s luxury brand, Sofitel, is currently implementing an extensive brand revamp and hotel network re-design. The French hospitality group has now expanded the Sofitel lineup with two new brands – SO by Sofitel and Sofitel Legend.Recently Sofitel has eliminated some properties from its portfolio. There were 206 properties in the year 2007, but now, after reassessment, there are 150 properties remaining.Sofitel Legend will be launched as the crème de la crème of the Sofitel brand, offering a collection of luxury properties across the world, redefining living heritage and palace hotels. The line will target high contribution travelers who crave landmark experiences within the world’s greatest cities.

AirAsia X eyes routes to Europe, New Zealand February 13, 2009

Long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X wants to lease up to five Airbus A340-300s so it can fly to new markets in Europe and New Zealand, its chief executive said on Thursday.”For the right price, we would like to lease five A340-300s, although they are in tight supply,” chief executive Azran Osman Rani told Dow Jones Newswires.”Depending on the availability of the aircraft, we want to move to new markets like Germany, France and New Zealand.”

Indian carriers end low fares February 12, 2009

Air travellers in India will now have to pay more as major airlines and low-cost carriers (LCCs) alike said they would withdraw their low base fares.According to livemint, Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines have decided to stop the low-fare advance purchase schemes, saying the airfares would now be decided by the market.But the regular fares and the fuel surcharge were not being touched, the airlines were quoted saying.

Singapore’s first Formula One Grand Prix, which was held in September, generated far more tourism revenue than initially expected, a government minister said.The event, the sport’s first night race, attracted more than 40,000 foreign visitors and generated S$168 million (A$170 million) in tourism revenue, S. Iswaran, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, told parliament. A copy of his remarks was posted on the ministry website late Monday.

A $382 million South Korean airport has become a “ghost airport” with not a single passenger in the past three months, officials and a news report said Monday.Yangyang International Airport on the east coast handled its last flight on November 1, the Korea Airport Corporation said.The state firm admitted that last year 146 airport staff served only a daily average of 26 passengers at the seven-year-old airport.

A BRISBANE family is in shock after an airline told the mother she could only take her husband’s ashes to India as checked luggage, contrary to Sikh tradition.Nashater Hayer and her daughter Debbie are scheduled to fly to the Indian state of Punjab on Sunday to throw Kewal Singh Hayer’s ashes into the Kiratpur River, but the airline will not let Mrs Hayer carry the urn with her.Mrs Hayer does not speak much English, but Debbie Hayer said her mother was distraught to find out the airline expected her husband’s remains to travel in the cargo hold, The Courier-Mail reports.
