This year the Chinese New Year Parade promises to be the most extravagant party of the year and where better to celebrate the New Year than the Wan Chai Harbourfront in Hong Kong. Intricately adorned floats, street entertainers and beautiful flower markets take over the harbour and city streets while thousands of glittering lights cover the buildings like blankets.

Fears wolf at Great Wall may attack tourists December 29, 2008

A wolf has been spotted near a popular tourist spot along the Great Wall of China, with officials rushing to catch it before it attacks anyone, state media said Tuesday.The wolf was spotted last week near the Badaling section of the wall, a destination for hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, the Beijing News reported.It said experts had analysed a photo of the animal and looked into traces that it left behind, concluding beyond doubt that it was indeed a wolf.

China has replaced the United States as Japan’s biggest export destination, underlining the Olympic host’s emergence as a global economic power.Japan’s finance ministry said exports to China outstripped those to the US in July, marking the 38th consecutive increase in exports to its Asian neighbor. It was the first time Japan had sold more goods to China than to any other country since the government started keeping records in 1950. Economists are skeptical that exports to China will continue to drive Japan’s faltering economic recovery.

Costa signs Shanghai cruise consultancy deal December 22, 2008

Shanghai International Port Group has signed up leading European cruise operator, Costa Cruises, to jointly set up China’s first customer service and consulting firm targeting the cruise sector, Shanghai Daily has reported.The contract was signed on Friday night in Genoa by Costa’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pier Luigi Foschi, and SIPG Chairman, Lu Haigu.The joint venture aims to provide consulting service support to Chinese travel agents, as well as champion the sales of Costa cruise packages in China and around the world, according to a statement issued on Friday. The scope of the joint venture includes commercial consulting, tourist information consulting, and cruise and passenger shipping information consulting, the report added.

Hilton signs Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Shanghai December 18, 2008

A Hilton Hotels Corporation subsidiary has signed an agreement with Shanghai New Union Building Co Ltd to manage the Waldorf Astoria On The Bund Shanghai. The hotel will be located in the heritage building on the infamous Bund in Shanghai and is scheduled to open in 2011.The 266-room Waldorf Astoria On The Bund Shanghai will comprise two buildings. The main entrance at the heritage building will be located at No 2 on the Bund which housed the infamous Shanghai Club, an exclusive Gentlemen’s Club in the 1920s. This building will be connected by a courtyard to a new-build modern tower located behind the Bund on Sichuan Road.

Beijing : The event takes place every year in January and February in a wonderful natural location that will take your breath away, the Longqing Gorge. This Gorge, indeed, is characterised by waterfalls and clean watercourse, by particularly shaped mountains and stones and by fantastic caves, which attract throughout the year a number of visitors. In the seasons when the Longqing Gorge does not host the festival, indeed, it is the ideal destination for people who want to admire a landscape unique in the world.Some of the most appreciated sights are the cave of the hundred flowers (Baihua), and the Shenxianyuan (Immortal) and Jingang temples, but also the 50 m high waterfall that welcomes visitors near the entrance. Visitors can also admire a hill emerging from the water that is similar to a bell, and the Fengguan Isle, which is considered as a symbol of the Longqing Gorge. The isle is surrounded by water, except for one side, where it is closed by high mountains. If you want to be sure not to miss anything of this magic place, you can take part in the tours that include all the major sights.

China Airline Sector Seen Posting Loss In 2008 November 3, 2008

Industry analysts said on Thursday that the Chinese airline is set to end up with a heavy loss in 2008 amidst the country”s slowing domestic economy and the severe economic recession across the globe. During recent days, Air China, the flagship carrier and Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines have been warning that they are most likely to post losses for three quarters of the year due to high fuel costs and weak economy.A senior executive with China Eastern said, “Traffic did not pick up after the Olympics as we had previously expected. The situation improved a bit during the weeklong national holiday in October but the outlook is still murky, given the faltering global economy. There is little doubt that the whole industry will make losses now that the flag carrier has also issued a profit warning.”

China the most populous country of the world, is officially known as the People’s Republic of China (with the exception of the other state known as the Republic of China which currently governs the island of Taiwan). In economic or business contexts, “the Greater China region” informally means Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The region has been home to a long-standing civilization comprising successive states and cultures dating back more than 6,000 years. Imperial China was one of the world’s most technologically advanced civilizations for centuries. It is home to the four greatest inventions of the human civilization— paper, compass, gunpowder and printing — which eventually spread to the rest of the world.

Until the 20th century, China largely remained a coherent empire governed by scholar-officials. In 1912, the last Chinese dynasty, the Qing, fell to the nationalists under the charismatic leadership of Sun Yat-sen. In 1949 the communists declared the People’s Republic.
